One of the most anticipated titles from behemoth publisher Square Enix is their first game born from their Marvel partnership, The Avengers Project, which was announced early last year.

US-based developer Crystal Dynamics – famous for their work on the newly rebooted Tomb Raider series – are set to spearhead development on the video game adaptation of Stan Lee and Marvel’s ragtag bunch of superheroes. Though next to nothing has been revealed about The Avengers Project since its tease early last year, rumors suggest that it will be an online MMO-style experience as opposed to a single player-focused campaign.

That being said, recent rumors from 4chan have surfaced that may shed some much needed light on the highly anticipated upcoming comic book/movie/video game crossover title. Said 4chan post is as follows:

Cutting to the short of it: “The Avengers Project” is Avengers: Ultimate Alliance. But it’s not just Ultimate Alliance 3, it’s a full reboot with the name on it (think something like the new God of War, minus the story continuity: similar name, totally new gameplay/story structure). That’s the reason why the tagline of the first teaser was “Reassemble”, to hint at it being a reboot. This is also why the previous Ultimate Alliance games got uprezed recently for current-gen.

The game takes place from the perspective of multiple Avengers after a cataclysmic incident broke the team apart (think more Dissassembled than Civil War), but there are 3 which are the core focus: Captain America, Iron Man, and Scarlet Witch (who you heard in the trailer). They aren’t the ONLY playable characters, but they are the leads of the story. Gameplay wise think a mix between Uncharted and Infamous

It’ll also have connections putting it in both the same world as the PS4 Spider-Man game (that Sanctum Sanctorum appearance in still images was not just for fun), as well as Eidos Montreal’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Marvel Games wants in on that shared universe idea that have made the films literal billions of dollars.

Obviously, we’d suggest to take these rumors with a grain of salt for now, but we must say that some of these nuggets of intel do sound believable, particularly the connections to Insomniac’s upcoming Spider-Man title on PS4, which will be another hotly anticipated game that also shares Marvel’s prominent partnership. Further still, the mention of gameplay similar to Uncharted and Infamous also lines up, as Crystal Dynamics’ pedigree is predominantly third-person action games.

Nevertheless, we do know that Square Enix will have their own presentation at E3 this year, so there’s a very good chance that more official details about The Avengers Project will be revealed then. As always, we’ll let you know as more information is confirmed.
