Jared Leto will star in Sony’s Morbius, which will center around the Marvel antihero of the same name. Life director David Espinosa will direct. Lost in Space remake creators Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama will pen the script. There is currently no word on a release date.

First appearing in Amazing Spider-Man #101 (1971), Dr. Michael Morbius tried to cure himself of a rare blood disease and botched the experiment. He transformed into a vampire-like creature who often fought Spider-Man before becoming a hero in later stories. As a child, Morbius was sequestered from society because of his displeasing appearance. He was a highly intelligent, Nobel Prize-winning biologist who lost everything after the experiment.

Leto’s acting career has catapulted him to heights few entertainers reach. After winning an Academy Award for his performance in Dallas Buyers Club, Leto went on to star as the Joker in 2016’s Suicide Squad, a performance starkly contrasting with his acclaimed turn in the aforementioned Oscar-winning drama. He has also appeared in Blade Runner 2049 and a number of other high-profile films.

Leto’s take on the character could redeem him after his poorly received Joker performance, but he would need to strike a balance that will please fans of the character and casual viewers. Fingers crossed.
