After carving out a niche as one of the all-time great villains of the MCU in Black Panther, Michael B. Jordan will lend his voice to the main character Rooster Teeth’s upcoming animated series gen:LOCK. The series is set in the near future, with Earth’s last free society is on the losing side of a global war. In a last-ditch effort, they recruit a diverse team of young pilots to control the next generation of mecha. For those unfamiliar with the term, mecha are those giant robots controlled by a tiny person inside them.

It’s fitting that Jordan, himself a big anime fan, would end up leading the cast of the first Western-produced anime to be exported to Japan. “Michael’s visionary career choices and commitment to meaningful entertainment, not to mention his love of anime, line up perfectly with what drives Rooster Teeth,” said Gray G. Haddock, head of Rooster Teeth animation and creator of gen:LOCK. “We’re thrilled for the opportunity to do some cool sci-fi storytelling together.”

Jordan himself made the announcement on Instagram earlier today.

This is another milestone achievement for Rooster Teeth as well. What was once a couple guys in a room has turned into a powerhouse of entertainment, with gen:LOCK to be their biggest animated series since RWBY. Jordan’s own company, Outlier Productions, will also co-produce the series. It’s expected to premiere sometime later this year.
