It’s only a matter of time now before we get a film that Taika Waititi writes, directs… and plays an imaginary Hitler. Yes, the guy behind Hunt For The Wilderpeople just started filming his current project, JoJo Rabbit, for Fox Searchlight. The film’s set during WWII, and stars newcomer Roman Griffin Davis as JoJo, a lonely young German boy. Raised by his mother (Scarlett Johannson), his only companion is an imaginary friend. Who’s Hitler. Who happens to be played by Waititi. My god, what a glorious time to be alive.
Waititi most recently helped liven up the character of Thor, as well as the MCU on a whole, with Thor: Ragnarok. Now, the auteur seems ready to tackle an original story that’s not weighed down by a multi-billion dollar franchise. “I’m stoked to begin shooting my anti-war satire,” Waititi said in a statement. “We’ve assembled an incredible cast and I couldn’t be more excited to finally ridicule Nazis and their beliefs. This film is going to piss off a lot of racists and that makes me very happy.”
The film also stars Oscar winner Sam Rockwell, Rebel Wilson, and Thomasin McKenzie. It’s being shot in and around Prague, Czech Republic. No release date is set, but that only makes us want it more.
