In a pretty unprecedented move, J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot film and television production company has expanded into the video game space.

As reported by THR, the American film writer-director-producer has launched Bad Robot Games, which is a brand new video game division under his well-known Bad Robot banner.

The company’s president and COO, Brian Weinstein, announced that the entertainment production company has struck a partnership deal with Tencent, the Chinese multi-media conglomerate, to form Bad Robot Games. As a result, the partnership will focus on developing exclusive games that J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot will oversee, with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment supporting as a minority investor.

Interestingly, Bad Robot Games will work with other well-established developers to help bring their unique vision to mobile, PC, and console markets, and this could take the shape of either large AAA experiences, and/or smaller scale indie titles. The in-house creative team within Bad Robot – which is made up of seasoned artists, writers and designers – will assist in bringing the projects to fruition.

This new game division will be spearheaded by David Baranoff, who has worked with Bad Robot since 2006. On paper, he sounds very experienced, as he’s worked in collaboration with many other big game developers before, such as Epic Games and ChAIR.

“I’m a massive games fan, and increasingly envious of the amazing tools developers get to work with, and the worlds they get to play in. Now we are doubling down on our commitment to the space with a unique co-development approach to game making that allows us to focus on what we do best, and hopefully be a meaningful multiplier to our developer partners,” said Abrams. “Dave’s creativity, deep passion and skillful leadership will be incredibly valuable as we harness our partner Tencent’s expertise, experience and reach to bring our games to audiences around the world.”

If you’re a gamer and a fan of the Cloverfield franchise, then I’m sure this new announcement will sound incredibly promising. It’s definitely a distinct and diverse sci-fi universe to plumb for new and exciting video game experiences. We’ve got our fingers firmly crossed that a concrete Cloverfield game announcement will be coming down the pipeline.

As always, we’ll keep you in the loop as more details come to light.
