According to Deadline, District 9 director Neill Blomkamp has signed on to direct a new RoboCop film, titled RoboCop Returns, for MGM. The film will function as a sequel to the original and will have no connection to the 2014 remake. The script (rewritten by Justin Rhodes) will be based on an unused story from RoboCop writers Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner.
Directed by Paul Verhoeven, the original film chronicled the death and resurrection of Officer Alex Murphy, a cop-turned-cyborg who fights crime. The movie starred Peter Weller as Murphy, Nancy Allen as Officer Anne Lewis, and Ronny Cox as Dick Jones. Two sequels and a remake followed, but all three were considered both critical and box office failures.
In addition to District 9, Blomkamp has directed the Matt Damon-starring Elysium, the Die Antwoord-headed Chappie, and a number of short films. His filmography largely consists of sci-fi films.
Expect the studio to drop new tidbits on the film in the coming months.
