Nintendo has announced that the Switch-exclusive JRPG, Octopath Traveler, has sold over 1 million copies worldwide — wowsers!

Even though classic turn-based JRPGs from yesteryear aren’t considered “mainsteam”, it’s refreshing to see Square Enix and Acquire’s latest release faring so well in the sales department. For a relatively niche corner of the RPG market, Octopath Traveler has been a resounding success sales-wise, as well as with both critics and fans alike.

You can read our in-depth review of the title here. Long story short, we absolutely adored it and ultimately surmised that, “If you’re an RPG fan and own a Switch, you need to pull the trigger on this one.”

When you consider that Tokyo RPG Factory’s decent-yet-uninspired JRPG effort Lost Sphear didn’t quite gain the same kind of positive reception earlier this year with critics and fans, it’s clear that Octopath Traveler has evidently struck an emphatic chord with gamers around the world.

In Japan, Square Enix has even gone on record to publicly apologise to the Japanese fanbase for a lack of physical stock for the much-anticipated JRPG. This in turn has led the company to admit that Octopath Traveler has far exceeded the publisher’s internal expectations for the game.

We’re really enjoying our time with the game but how about all of you? Have you had a chance to pick it up yet and what do you all think of it so far? Do let us know in the comments below.

Octopath Traveler is out now exclusively for Nintendo Switch.
