Looks like the adventures of world-famous character Spongebob Squarepants aren’t over. According to ComingSoon.net, Nickelodeon has greenlit Kamp Koral, a 13-episode spinoff of the worldwide phenomenon. The series will follow a 10-year-old Spongebob as he frolics, (jelly)fishes, and forms friendships at sleepaway camp. Vincent Waller and Marc Ceccarelli will executive produce the CG-animated series.
Ever since the departure of series creator Stephen Hillenburg (who passed away last year) and co-developer/supervising producer Derek Drymon (whose name I always scanned the opening credits for to ensure that the episode would entertain me), the show has suffered a marked drop in quality. Sadly, it hasn’t recovered yet (nor do I really expect it to).
Spongebob Squarepants premiered on July 17, 1999 and quickly gained a fanbase that touched every corner of the globe. The series followed the misadventures of sea sponge Spongebob and his astoundingly stupid best friend, Patrick Star. Together, they wreak havoc on the small town of Bikini Bottom and prove time and again that blind optimism ultimately wins the day. Kind of.
