It’s official: Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The acclaimed director is now set to write and direct Thor 4, a film the general public didn’t think could happen. For many ardent fans, though, the announcement comes straight from their wettest dreams. Both critically acclaimed and commercially successful, Ragnarok boasted an offbeat approach verging on the avant-garde. It’s exciting stuff, but with it comes the reality that we won’t get Waititi’s other high-profile project (a live-action Akira) for quite some time.
Borys Kit broke the news in an exclusive piece for The Hollywood Reporter, sending fans into frothing fits and generating a buzz the entire internet could hear. The announcement immediately threw the future of Akira into question and made Thor 4 Waititi’s top priority.
Waititi’s filmography includes four episodes of the hilarious Flight of the Concords, What We Do In The Shadows, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, and the upcoming Jojo Rabbit.
Although nothing beyond this news has been officially confirmed, expect Chris Hemsworth to return as the alien-cleaving Asgardian. Marvel wouldn’t move forward with the project without him.
