A sequel to Rian Johnson‘s massively successful whodunit, Knives Out, is happening. According to Deadline, Lionsgate CEO John Feltheimer announced the sequel during a third-quarter earnings call, confirming hints Johnson dropped after the first entry solidified itself as one of 2019’s most beloved films.
Knives Out centers around private investigator Benoit Blanc as he attempts to solve a complicated murder case. The film features a formidable ensemble cast that includes Daniel Craig, Ana De Armas, Chris Evans, Michael Shannon, Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Johnson, Frank Oz, and Christopher Plummer.
Johnson’s plans to develop Knives Out stretch back to a 2010 interview conducted by Matilda Battersby of The Independent. When asked about what was next for him at the time, he said:
I haven’t told anyone this yet, but I was thinking last night it would be great to do an old-fashioned murder mystery. Like an Agatha Christie, I love her! It’s a genre which is so popular in fiction but is really difficult to translate onto screen.
Johnson’s passion project was announced in September 2018, as was Daniel Craig’s involvement. Evans, de Armas, Michael Shannon, Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Johnson, Lakeith Stanfield, and Toni Collette joined the cast a month later.
Stay tuned for updates! They’re sure to come trickling in as Johnson’s sequel inches closer to its release date.
