Disney+ has a new exclusive, and it’s a little picture called Artemis Fowl. The Kenneth Branagh-directed film was slated for a May 29 theatrical release but will now hit Disney’s streaming platform instead. No new release date has been announced.

Within the last month, the coronavirus pandemic has dramatically changed the way we experience movies. March saw newly released films such as Bloodshot, Onward, and The Invisible Man move from theater screens to living rooms. Imminent blockbusters such as Mulan, No Time To Die,  and Black Widow have been pushed back months and production on more distant releases has been postponed. The pandemic has forced the film industry to adapt and adjust, and Disney’s decision to skip a theatrical release for Artemis Fowl is an example of that effort.

Disney+’s President of Content and Marketing, Ricky Strauss, said:

With audiences largely unable to attend theatres in the current environment, we are thrilled to offer the premiere of Artemis Fowl on Disney+. Director Kenneth Branagh and his spectacular cast take viewers right into the vibrant fantasy world of the beloved book, which fans have been waiting to see brought to life onscreen for years. It’s great family entertainment that is the perfect addition to Disney+’s summer lineup.”

Artemis Fowl is based on Irish author Eoin Colfer‘s eight-book fantasy series from the early 2000s. The books center around boy genius Artemis Fowl (portrayed by Ferdia Shaw in the new film) as he sets out to find his missing father, a criminal mastermind. Colin Farrell, Judi Dench,  and Josh Gad lead the supporting cast. Hopefully, Disney’s gamble pays off. Regardless, don’t count on seeing Disney’s bigger releases on the streaming service before they hit theaters.
