Star Wars fans excited to dig deeper into the sci-fi series’ lore are going to have to wait a little longer. Lucasfilm confirmed today that the launch of Star Wars: The High Republic, an ambitious interconnected collection of new books and comics, has been postponed by five months.
Originally set for an August 2020 release, both Charles Soule’s adult novel Star Wars: The High Republic: Light of the Jedi and Star Wars: The High Republic: A Test of Courage, Justina Ireland’s novel aimed at middle grades, are now on track for a January 5, 2021 debut. These books will be followed by Claudia Gray’s YA novel Star Wars: The High Republic: Into the Dark on February 2, 2021.
For the time being, Marvel’s Star Wars: The High Republic comic book series and IDW Publishing’s Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures series have been delayed until further notice, though new release dates are expected sooner rather than later.
“Given these unprecedented times,” said Lucasfilm Publishing creative director Michael Siglain in a published statement, “we have made the decision to move the launch of Star Wars: The High Republic to January 2021 to ensure that the launch is as grand and epic as it deserves to be. Now, I know that waiting isn’t easy. And I know fans have been excited for this since it was first announced. I’m right there with you… We can’t wait for readers to experience the golden age of the Jedi.”
Set roughly 200 years before the events of the prequel trilogy, The High Republic is expected to give fans their first canonical look at the Galactic Republic and the Jedi Order at the height of their power. Lucasfilm has already revealed that this era will be off-limits to any onscreen Star Wars projects for the entire run of the multi-year project, ever-so-slightly narrowing down the possibilities of what mysterious projects J.D. Dillard, Rian Johnson, and Taika Watiti are developing.
