While talk of a Borderlands movie has been percolating since 2015, it looks like development on the filmic adaptation of Gearbox’s popular looter-shooter franchise is beginning to pick up some steam.
Case in point: Oscar winner, Cate Blanchett, has been officially cast as Lilith in Eli Roth’s upcoming sci-fi pic. Yes, The Lord Of The Rings star is confirmed to be stepping into the familiar role of Borderlands‘ powerful vault-hunter and phasewalking Siren.
As you probably may remember, Lilith is one of the original game’s four playable characters, though she has also made a few return visits to the series since then. Indeed, she’s also appeared as an NPC in Borderlands 2, the Pre-Sequel, and Borderlands 3, as well.
Here’s a rundown of what director Eli Roth had to say about the recent casting choice:
I’m so lucky to have the amazing Cate Blanchett starring in Borderlands. We had the most incredible collaboration together on The House with a Clock in Its Walls, and I believe there’s nothing she can’t do. From drama to comedy and now action, Cate makes every scene sing. Working with her is truly a director’s dream come true, and I feel so fortunate that I get to do it again on an even bigger scale. Everyone brings their A-game to work with Cate, and I know together we’re going to create another iconic character in her already storied career.
So far, the confirmation of Cate Blanchett appearing as Lilith in Roth’s Borderlands flick is the first piece of official casting news we’ve heard about the much anticipated project. As always, though, we’ll keep you up to date as more news comes in.
